The following was submitted by a listener in Ireland.  Many thanks, Marc.  “This case may be of interest to you.  Hi Jerry, I hope this message finds you well. I have watched many of your appearances on various YouTube channels where you talk about your work and research into schizophrenia.  Are you aware of a Southern American band named Pantera whose founding member, guitarist ‘Dimebag’ Darrell Abbott was murdered/assassinated by a schizophrenic US Marine.  Here is a link to an interview with Dimebag’s widow where she talks about some of the facts and events and strange ‘coincidences’ surrounding this tragedy.  I would be very interested to hear your take on this and if it’s relevant in any way to your research and if it’s relevant to your understanding of schizophrenia.  Yours sincerely, Marc”

I watched the video and must say, this couple is special in that somehow Darrell knew he was not coming home again, i.e., (in the video his partner tells the story of their last time together when Darrell all of a sudden turns around and says, “You know, I love you,” which took Rita by surprise.  Her reply was, “Awww, I love you too.”  They’d been together since the age of eight and grew up together as kids; lived together for twenty years and at a young age, Darrell lost his life.

Rita’s story is a “cliff hanger” – others in the crew were killed or shot and damaged.  It happened just moments after the music team got on stage to begin the show.  The crowd witnessed all of this.  Imagine the trauma that caused them!

Prior to 2004, public shootings were somewhat rare – not like today in 2025 where public shootings are more common.  Here are some notable examples:

University of Texas Tower Shooting (1966):

Charles Whitman opened fire from the University of Texas at Austin's clock tower, killing 16 people and wounding 32 others.

San Ysidro McDonald's Massacre (1984):

James Huberty shot and killed 21 adults and children at a McDonald's restaurant.

Luby's Cafeteria Shooting (1991):

George Hennard crashed his truck into a Luby's Cafeteria in Killeen, Texas, and then shot and killed 23 people before taking his own life.

Columbine High School Shooting (1999):

These led the public to believe the problem was guns and so beating the drum of gun control became the new thing.  Nowhere does the media talk about the real cause of these shootings – just get rid of the guns and all will be well.  Not so.

The shooter in this case, Nathan Gale, was a discharged Marine who, according to his mother, suffered from paranoid schizophrenia.  “Gale returned home to Marysville, Ohio, with medication for his schizophrenia, but his mother wasn’t sure if he continued to take it. Indeed, his behavior became more and more erratic throughout 2004, and some of his friends even began distancing themselves from him.”

This story reminds me of the stories of some of my clients who have been willing to tell their stories on video (see videos page)

Rita, in the video below, understands the responsibility of the military and psychiatrists to report to the Darrell family that this schizophrenic guy was discharged from the Marines that, for one thing, train people to kill.  Unfortunately for everyone, the family was not notified even after Darrell told his doctor he had to stop the heavy metal band from getting into his head and telling him negative things.

The conversation is reminiscent of how drugs are so abused by the psychiatrists and pharmaceutical companies that refuse to understand that schizophrenia is not a physical malady but a spiritual one.
